Grayson Perry: The Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman
6. Oct - 19. Feb 12 / ended British Museum£10, concessions available
10.00 - 1730 open late on Fridays till 20.30
Grayson Perry curates an installation of his new works alongside objects made by unknown men and women throughout history from the British Museum's collection.
He'll take you to an afterlife conjured from his imaginary world, exploring a range of themes connected with notions of craftsmanship and sacred journeys -- from shamanism, magic and holy relics to motorbikes, identity and contemporary culture.
Vases covered in witty captions, elaborate tapestries and the centrepiece, a richly decorated cast iron coffin-ship, will be displayed alongside objects from the past two million years of culture and civilisation. From the first great invention, the hand axe, to a Hello Kitty pilgrim hand-towel, you will discover a reality that is old and new, poetic and factual, and funny as well as grim.
'This is a memorial to all the anonymous craftsmen that over the centuries have fashioned the manmade wonders of the world? The craftsman's anonymity I find especially resonant in an age of the celebrity artist.'

Fantastic thought-provoking exhibition

Curated by the artist, this exhibition includes a mini retrospective of his own work, as well as more recent pieces, mingled together with artefacts from the British Museum's collection.
His honest approach to his own life and the work he has produced is fresh and unfussy, which helps to make this exhibition a must-see for those not usually museum-goers. The link from his work to the pieces from the Museum are fascinating and at times amusing. It will undoubtedly encourage visitors beyond the confines of this gallery.
Take time to read his text panels as well as time to sit and look at some of the large-scale works which culminate with the Tomb of the Unknown Craftsman.

Highly recommended. I'd advise you to buy tickets in advance, or arrive early, as the day I went along was sold out, so I had to return with a ticket the next day.
