Aida Rubio Gonzalez, Once Upon A Time, 2011
Almodovar meets Tarantino in this new body of work by AIDA RUBIO GONZALEZ, a significant new voice in contemporary painting.
When the directors of Rosenfeld Porcini first showed the work of Aida Rubio Gonzalez at their Naples gallery, the exhibition was a sell-out. Three years later, for her first London show, this young Spaniard has made a new body of work that shows how far her vision and technique has evolved. The paintings in La Vida es un Sueno, 15 December-18 February 2012, layer together images, memories and symbols, to create complex narratives that draw on American cinema, but remain unmistakably Spanish at heart.
Born in 1978 in La Laguna, Tenerife, Rubio Gonzalez trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in the northern Spanish city of Salamanca, where she lives and teaches today. A figurative painter, who has flirted with abstraction, her earlier work was notable for a powerful patchwork of colour and brushwork that dissolved at times into the purest abstraction around her subjects.
In La Vida es un Sueno, Rubio Gonzalez juxtaposes narrative and colour in a startling explosion that gives full rein to her growing confidence and willingness to take risks. At the heart of the exhibition is a series of complex street scenes that perfectly capture the Spanish “movida”, the frenetic celebration of Spanish life that was unleashed after the death of Franco. Each painting resembles a still from a film: Almodovar-like in its energy and pure riot of colour, paying homage to the American screen and to Tarantino’s Reservoir Dogs in particular.
Full of humour, the breezy everyday scenarios beg closer examination. In Rubio Gonzalez‘s world, nothing is what it seems: the past co-exists with the present, haunted by her leitmotif signs and symbols that dance collage-like across the surface, or hover as memories in the shadows.
